When a hotel floor is cleaned, and how to work around it

Cleaning is not spread evenly across the day. In most central Amsterdam buildings the round begins once the breakfast service ends and works floor by floor through the middle of the day, finishing somewhere in the middle of the afternoon. A trolley in the corridor, a propped door two rooms along and a vacuum running somewhere out of sight are the normal sounds of a hotel floor at eleven in the morning, and they thin out considerably by four.

Two ways to place an hour around it

The first is to let the room be cleaned early and book afterwards. Leave for breakfast, come back to a finished room, and the floor is quiet behind you for the rest of the day. The second is to have the room skipped altogether, which the desk will arrange on a phone call and which nobody thinks twice about. Either works. What causes trouble is the third option, which is doing nothing and hoping the round has already passed your door.

Turndown, in the buildings that still do it

Some hotels send somebody round again in the early evening. Where that happens it usually falls between six and eight, which is after most daylight bookings have ended, but it is worth asking about if your afternoon is running long or if you have taken a block of eight hours that will cross into the evening.

What it means for the arrival window

Very little, in the street. Inside the building it can add a few minutes, because a service lift in use and a corridor with a trolley across it both slow the last stretch of a journey.
